Illegal Move

THESIS FILM: ILLEGAL MOVE

In a world where the rules of chess are the laws of the land, a chivalrous White Knight must protect his King from his long lost lover, the Red Queen.

Created at Ringling College of Art & Design in collaboration with Kyle Lopez. We were responsible for almost everything within the film, including (but not limited to): story, writing, visual development, modeling, texturing, rigging, layout, animation, lighting, compositing, and editing.

MODELING/LOOK DEVELOPMENT/RIGGING

I was responsible for modeling and rigging the Queen, the Bishop, and the King. It’s always an interesting challenge to translate a 2D drawing, which can be cheated, into a functioning 3D model. I was also responsible for look development on the Queen and King.

VISUAL DEVELOPMENT

I was responsible for character exploration, and eventually final character designs for the Queen, the Rook, and the Bishop. Additionally, I worked on exploration and design for the environment and props. The visual language of the film was born during this exploration phase.

STORYBOARDS

Before we could start production on the film, we needed a fully working animatic that was approved by our thesis faculty. I contributed to most of the boards in the sequence below.
